MagPlay surface guide

A happy home for your MagPlay.

Smooth, dry and in good condition? Your surface may be a great match. Find the right place for your MagPlay decal or choose a MagPlay Board for more flexibility.

The one-minute check

Start with your surface.

Paint, texture and condition all matter. Use this guide before choosing where to apply your MagPlay decal.

Smooth and in good condition

  • Sound, fully cured painted plaster or plasterboard
  • Smooth painted doors and cupboards
  • Glass and mirrors
  • Melamine and laminate
  • Smooth, sealed timber

A smooth surface is the starting point, not a guarantee. Check its finish and condition too.

Check with us first

  • Washable, scrubbable or stain-resistant paint
  • Low-VOC or air-cleaning paint
  • Ultra-matt, high-gloss or very slick finishes
  • Lightly textured surfaces
  • Older paint or unknown coatings

Send us a photo and the paint details before applying your MagPlay decal.

Ask us about your surface →

Choose a MagPlay Board instead

  • Textured, rendered or rough walls
  • Brick, concrete or bare plaster
  • Wallpaper, peeling or chalky paint
  • Damp rooms and bathrooms
  • Paint applied less than 30 days ago

Apply the MagPlay decal to a suitable backing board instead. Any mounting method must suit the wall and be secure.

MagPlay® WallKind™

Made for play. Designed to move with you.

A padded core and flexible adhesive backing help your MagPlay decal sit flat on a suitable surface. It is designed for repositioning and careful removal from sound, fully cured paint.

Smooth contact

A flat, even surface lets the adhesive make consistent contact.

Gentle removal

Warm gently on low heat, start at an upper corner and peel slowly, keeping your MagPlay decal close to the surface.

Room to change

Keep the backing clean and save its protective sheet. Move occasionally rather than frequently; grip can vary after reapplication.

Check the finish, not just the colour.

Some coatings are designed to repel marks and can also resist adhesive. Paint branding alone cannot confirm compatibility: check the exact coating, surface condition and manufacturer's advice.

Fresh paint? Allow time to cure.

Wait at least 30 days after painting, and longer if the paint manufacturer requires it. After washing a wall, allow 72 hours before application.

Every surface is different.

Paint, preparation and surface condition vary. Remove your MagPlay decal slowly and gently, and ask us if you are unsure about your finish.

Popular in Europe

Paint finishes worth checking first

These ranges are examples to check more carefully, rather than a list of paints that never work. The exact formulation, finish, curing time and surface condition affect adhesion. The list is not exhaustive.

Jotun · Lady Pure Color

Super-matt or dirt-repellent finishes can make it harder for a MagPlay decal to grip. Check the exact Lady product and finish.

Beckers Elegant / Mood Care Wall

For low-VOC, silky or ultra-matt variants, check the exact coating. These characteristics alone do not establish whether a MagPlay decal will adhere.

Alcro · ad.white / ad.matt

Ultra-matt finishes can affect the way adhesive makes contact. Send us the exact paint details before applying your MagPlay decal.

Caparol · Samtidsmatt / Indeko-plus

Check the precise product, surface treatment and finish. Do not assume that every range from the same brand has the same adhesion properties.

Flügger · Flutex 5 / 7 / 10

Some variants and surface finishes may give reduced grip. Check the exact Flutex product and the condition of the painted surface.

Little Greene / Farrow & Ball · Estate Emulsion

Richly pigmented or very matt finishes deserve an extra check. Confirm the exact product and finish; Estate Emulsion is a Farrow & Ball range.

A few helpful answers.

Can removal affect the paint?

WallKind™ is designed for careful removal from suitable, fully cured paint. Warm gently on low heat and peel slowly, close to the surface. The result depends on the paint and its condition, so a mark-free result cannot be guaranteed.

Can I move the MagPlay decal repeatedly?

Keep moves to a minimum and follow the care instructions. Adhesion and surface condition can change with removal and reapplication.

What if the MagPlay decal does not stick?

Stop and check the surface, coating, dust and moisture. Contact us with photos before trying again.

What if I prefer not to apply adhesive to the wall?

Choose a MagPlay Board combination. The MagPlay decal goes on the backing board; choose a safe mounting method suitable for your room.

Can I use MagPlay in a rental?

A suitable smooth painted surface can work well, with careful removal when you move. Check your rental terms and the condition of the paint first. A MagPlay Board lets you apply your MagPlay decal to the board instead.

What can we use on our MagPlay decal?

Use MagPlay magnets and other lightweight magnets, magnetic tiles, chalk, whiteboard markers or washable crayons, following the product care instructions. Avoid very heavy magnets.

Still unsure? We can help.

Send us a photo of the surface and any details about the paint or coating.
